Three Things You Need to Know When Color Blocking - Lookbook Store

Color blocking is one of the most sought trend of today’s fashion. There are always certain guidelines on how to do it. If you want to express yourself and creativity by contrasting or complementing colors, you may first want to learn which one looks good with the other and which one looks flashy and awesome when combined. Most designers love to create bold designs by pairing bright colors taken from the opposite sides of the color wheel. On the other hand, some prefer neutral hues to create sleek and classic looks. Read on and learn the basics of color blocking and how to do it stylishly.

Choose colors using the color wheel.

Let’s first understand the color wheel. Imagine the primary colors blue, red, and yellow as the main three points of the clock placed at 12, 4, and 8 respectively. From there, we can say that orange is between red and yellow, green between yellow and blue, and purple between blue and red. You can now start choosing colors each from the opposite side. Take yellow and blue for example, then add one more shade in the same hue to keep everything intact and pleasing to the eyes.

Decide between horizontal or vertical blocking.

Possibilities as re indeed endless when we talk about color blocking. But definitely you may want to choose between vertical and horizontal blocking styles to in order to beautify your body shape. Horizontal blocks are the most popular. But bad news is that they don’t have that slimming effect making them perfect for petite and well-proportioned people. Vertical blocks, on the other hand, are flattering and a bit tricky to do but can be easily achieved using prints.

Remember the rule of dark and bright colors.

Since color is the major element when it comes to this styling, remember rule of thumb that bright colors attract and dark colors conceal is very important. For example, you may want to wear a darker color for your jacket to slim down your arms or dark pants to make your legs look slender. On the other hand, you may opt to a bright colored jacket if you don’t want people to focus on your hips and thighs. Also, do your best to not give in to the temptation to wear more than four blocks of colors.
